TeamSugar user Jyramiah added a great anecdote to the Cell Phone Rant Group: What would you do if the person on the cell phone being rude called you rude for trying to help her?
It started with her working at a sandwich shop when a customer entered and got in line while talking on her cell phone. When the counter person tried to take the her order, what do you think the customer did? Said "hang on" to the person she was talking to and made the order? Told the person on the other line she'd call him back after she left the place of business?
Nope. The customer on the cell phone told the person on the other end of the line that the guy trying to help her behind the counter was being rude. By trying to do his job and help her. If that's not galling enough, when the customer with the really important phone call got to Jyramiah at the register, she had the nerve to complain about the sandwich guy being rude by interrupting her phone call. To hear what Jyramiah said to her, just read more.
Jyramiah gave her an earful:
Customer: "That young man was very rude."
J: "Well what did he do, ma'am?"
C: "He kept interrupting me while I was on the phone."
J. "Well you shouldn't be on the phone when you're ordering anyways. Sorry to say, but that is more rude than what he was doing. And if you have a problem with it, you can call my higher up. Here, let me get you his number. I'm sure he'll be happy to hear how people are treating his employees."
Good for you, J!

hah! that's brilliant! her phone couldn't have been so important that she couldn't hang up and call them back in 5 minutes while she ordered. self-important little chit!
1brilliant! Some people have such nerve. Fantastic someone put her in her place.
2I hate that! I work at a car rental agency and people are always trying to talk on the phone and rent at the same time. I just stand there staring at them until they hang up. I refuse to serve you if you can't give me your full attention like I am giving mine to you.
3Even with me, working at a print shop as a grafics, people are doing that. It seems to be common sense doing so, nowadays. The best think about those situations is, that those clients block everything and everyone else: When its their time and they are still on the phone, you wait, and wait and wait and wait. And other clients waiting too, and get the look to kill in their eyes. Brilliant, but somehow pretty anoying if you (like me) have to deal with a very tight schedule for your tasks.
4Agree with everyone with an added note: never be rude to people who are handling your food. It's just not a good idea.
5If I was the sandwich guy, I would have just skipped on to the next person in line...
6I love that, I agree with Deidre I would've skipped over her.
Seriously how hard is it to tell the person you are talking to hang on for one minute while I order, checkout, etc...
No call is THAT important and if it is wait until your done before coming into a restaurant or wherever.
7I ALWAYS hang up when I go into a any sort of line... I don't want to be "that girl" is usually what I tell the person on the phone before I hang up.
8Nice job Jyramiah! People that come through my lines on their phones are one of my top peeves. How hard is it to say "Hey, can I call you back in five minutes?"
9Sometimes people act like they are addicted to their cellphone, that is ridiculous.
10It's so rude to talk on the phone when someone is trying to help you. It treats them like a self-checkout machine, not worth basic courtesy. That sucks.
11The sense of entitlement the phone-lady showed drives me nuts. All the employees come off looking very good in this story. They could have been very rude to the customer but instead acted professionally and with appropriate courtesy under the circumstances. Well done!
12Love it! When I worked at Macy's I constantly had people on their phones holding up lines. It's rude enough to be on your phone, but I'd have women that would leave their card on the counter then, while waiting for me to ring them up, would have a hard time standing still. The end result would be them leaning against the counter, half facing away from me but turned enough to notice the line of people growing behind them as I struggle to determine the best way to get their attention without sounding rude myself. It's hard to tell somebody who is on their phone and facing away from you that their card has been declined or that you need to see their ID.
This is why I work in online customer support. I like helping people, but I don't like having to put up with them face to face. I also don't have to clean up after them.
13Edit: * "...half facing away from me but not turned enough to notice the line of people growing behind them..."
